Disasters strike at a moment’s notice. After which, the Catholic Charities network is called to be
prepared and respond quickly to the needs of the community. This was the focus of the Catholic
Charities USA Applied Institute for Disaster Excellence (AIDE) conference in Jacksonville, FL.
Benita Triplett, LISW, clinical therapist and supervisor in Sioux City, attended. Benita had seen
first-hand the swift action of Catholic Charities following the floods in western Iowa in spring of
2019. She and fellow team members organized immediately to visit the area, lend emotional
support and hand out gift cards to those who’d lost their homes. At the conference, Benita gained
a greater understanding of how to initiate and sustain disaster services. She learned from peers
how they’ve faced similar challenges and brought excellent resources and tools back to our
agency.
